Bolton Central School students have so many wonderful opportunities to travel and experience new things. When students share these adventures, they learn how to work together and how to best support each other. The bonds created while traveling together, setting up tents and breaking them down, and preparing meals and cleaning up after them, produce life long memories of community and camaraderie in addition to all the sites visited on this exciting trip.

During the 2024 Spring Vacation, thirteen students in grades 8-12 and six chaperones traveled with the Outing Club to California. The group kicked off their eight-day adventure with a walk across the Golden Gate Bridge on a beautiful, clear, sunny afternoon. The next day our travelers explored San Francisco, including Pier 39 where they saw sea lions, Ghirardelli Square, Chinatown, and a walk down the famous "crooked street", Lombard Street. From there, the group traveled down the coast where they saw giant Redwood trees at Henry Cowell State Park before enjoying an afternoon on the Boardwalk in Santa Cruz. Further down the Pacific Coast Highway, whale spouts were spotted in the distance outside of Monterey. From this area, the group kayaked approximately 2.5 miles out into the ocean and came across whales a mere 50 yards off their boats! The group was also treated to seeing sea otters and many marine birds. That afternoon students and chaperones learned a bit about Steinbeck as they walked along Cannery Row and visited the Monterey Aquarium and Fisherman’s Wharf. Much fun was had boarding and sledding down the sand dunes the following day. Next it was off to Pinnacles National Park for adventures exploring the amazing caves and beautiful rock formations. Then the group explored the Salinas Valley and visited the Monterey County Agricultural & Rural Live Museum in King City before heading to Morro Bay. The view of Morro Rock and the ocean was spectacular. Final highlights of the trip included a guided walk at the Elephant Seal Rookery and a Grand Rooms tour of Hearst Castle. The group literally set up camp and tented most nights in campgrounds and learned about Karl, the name of the Bay Area Fog. The evenings included campfires, lots of singing and laughter, and even trivia! Thank you to Green Tortoise Adventure Travels for taking our group on this amazing adventure!
