Mr. Volkmann and Mrs. Clesceri headed out on an exciting trip with our 5th grade class to the Crown Point Historical Site recently. In addition to touring the historical site, students who wish to participate are excited for an opportunity to learn more about our local bird populations. Under the guidance of an experienced team of citizen scientists, students get hands on experience in bird banding as part of this regionally acclaimed Bird Conservation Site. Due to the location under the Atlantic Flyway, the site is a premiere location for viewing birds migrating north for the season. Bird banding is an effort to identify and track different species of migratory birds that pass through the region every year, so as to better collect ecological data and improve conservation efforts.
Our students are fortunate to have these kinds of experiences so close to home. This station has been in operation for close to 50 years and banders have banded about 100 species of birds including over 25 species of warblers.
